Junior Engineering Day
Next dates: To be announced
An invitation to come along to Flixton for half or a full day
and learn an engineering skill. The following opportunities will
be available from 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 15:30. Some of the
sessions do not last the full 2.5 hours.

Suffolk & Essex Children's University
This day qualifies for a session on these Children's
Universities, so bring your passports along.

Metalwork
|
Mark up two pieces of aluminium provided for
cutting, drilling, bending, and riveting together. Then, metal
edges must be filed and sanded to a good finish. You will learn
important engineering skills in a full size workshop.

Woodwork
|
|
Measure up and mark out some of the wood needed, cut and drill it to
shape and then assemble your bug box or bird box. You will work
in a fully equipped carpenter's workshop.

Electronics
|
Basic electronics
Starting from a kit assemble a flashing LED on
Veroboard. You will learn how to follow a circuit
diagram, soldering and the types of components used. You
will then test your product using an Oscilloscope.

Advanced electronics
Working with a more advanced kit create a memory/
reaction game or electronic dice.
This option is only suitable for those that have
already completed the basic version as it assumes that
you can read a circuit diagram and solder.

Be a simulator pilot
|
|
Not just a short test flight, but learn how to take off, trim
the aeroplane, turn accurately, and most importantly land!
Before any pilot is allowed to fly solo they must master the
circuit. By the end of the session you will be able to do this.

Engine maintenance
|
Learn how to strip down a four stroke internal
combustion engine, and, importantly, how to put it back
together again.

|
|
Learn how to wire up a typical household circuit such
as a two way light switch

Basic Air Navigation
|
Learn how to plan the aircraft's course (including
the effect of wind speed and direction) using maps,
bearings, back bearings and scale drawings.

Technical Drawing
|
|
It all starts with an idea, that needs to be put on
paper so others can build it.
Come and try your hand at some really accurate
drawing.

Craft
|
Aimed at a younger audience than the other items
(7-10).
These are examples only, the exact task will be
announced nearer the date.

Design a keepsake box:
Decorate and personalise a wooden keepsake box. It
could be a box to hold your football medals, special
jewellery or for storing secret treasures! What will you
use yours for?

Door name plate:
Create a nameplate for your bedroom door, no-one will
be able to claim they didn't know it was your room
again.

|

General
All tools and materials are supplied. You will become a
member of the museum for the day which covers you under our
insurance policy. You should not expect to stay clean, so come
dressed in something that you don't care too much about. The
sessions except where noted are aimed at youngsters between 11 and 14 years of age.
Cost for each 2.5 hour session is £15. If you book a morning
and afternoon session for the same young person the cost for the
day is £25.
Places can be reserved by clicking the link below. Provided
that we still have spaces for the slot that you request we will
reserve the place for two weeks and email you back with a bill
which you should post a cheque for to the museum at the address
provided. We will attempt to keep the numbers of spaces as up to
date as possible.
